Your road trip

Our Vintage Tour through the picturesque Alentejo starts in Alcácer do Sal, the western gateway to the Alentejo. Alcácer do Sal is characterised by the gentle lagoon of the River Sado and rice cultivation and can look back on centuries of history. Here we check into the impressive Pousada Castelo Alcácer do Sal, a former fortress that combines centuries of history with modernity. On the forecourt of the pousada, you will be given a detailed introduction to the course of your journey. Over dinner together in the cloister of the Castelo de Alcácer do Sal, you will get to know your fellow travellers on your Vintage Tour.

On the second day of our Vintage Tour, we set off in our classic cars towards Beja and immerse ourselves in the endless cork oak forests of the Alentejo, which accompany us until our arrival in Beja. On our way, we drive our classic cars along winding roads and are impressed by the colour and diversity of the landscape. We stop off at a typical quinta and then continue on to Beja, the cultural centre of the southern Alentejo. From the mighty 13th century castle, we catch a unique view over the vast plains of the Alentejo with its grain fields and olive groves. After a tour of the town, we have dinner together in the former chapel of the Convento de Beja and enjoy this unique atmosphere with a typical Alentejo menu. The cloister of the former monastery, where we will also spend the night, invites you to linger afterwards.

In the morning, we head north to visit the city of Évora, which has a unique cultural heritage and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the way there, we take a section of the famous and beautiful N2 national road that runs through Portugal from north to south. This section is characterised by winding roads that are alternately lined with cork oak forests, vineyards and olive groves. In Évora, we take time to visit the Roman temple and the Gothic cathedral and enjoy a typical lunch in the unique cloister of the Convento dos Loios. We then continue in the direction of Crato. On our way, we will pass through Alentejan villages with their whitewashed houses and fortifications in our vintage cars. Once again, we take selected routes through picturesque landscapes characterised by rolling hills and cork oak forests, the symbol of the Alentejo. In the late afternoon, we arrive at the Pousada Flor da Rosa, which is housed in an impressive former monastery of the Order of Malta from the 14th century. We also have dinner together here.

On the journey to Vila Viçosa, we pass Campo Maior and Elvas. The landscape is characterised by an endless expanse and offers a view of the fortified villages that hint at the history of this border region. The fortified town of Elvas, with its bulwark fortifications, is a hidden gem of the Alentejo and invites you to visit the town centre as well. After a lunch break in Elvas, we make our way to Vila Viçosa and again pass through impressive landscapes. Here we spend the night in the Pousada Convento Vila Viçosa, which is located in a former monastery from the 14th century. Here we enjoy a typical local dinner in the chapter house of the monastery, which is decorated with frescoes from the 16th century.

On the last day of our tour, we head south from Vila Viçosa to visit the impressive fortifications of Monsaraz. We drive through cork oak forests and vineyards as far as the eye can see. From Monsaraz we have an impressive view of the vastness of the Alentejo and the Alqueva reservoir to the south, which forms the border with Spain and is one of the largest reservoirs in western and central Europe. We then start our return journey to Arraiolos. You have the option of spending a night at the Pousada Convento de Arraiolos or travelling home.

FAQs

What requirements must my classic car fulfil in order to take part in a Vintage Tour?

We would be delighted if you would take part in our tour through the picturesque Alentejo with your own classic vehicle. However, as we aim for a balanced field of drivers, your classic car should be similar to our MGAs in terms of vehicle type, year of manufacture and engine.

What is the total distance travelled on this Vintage Tour through the picturesque Alentejo?

The total distance of this road trip is around 650 kilometres.

How long are the daily distances?

Vintage Tours' tours are designed to give you plenty of time to enjoy the wonderful landscapes and cultural highlights that we have prepared for you. On your road trip through the Alentejo, you will cover around 150 kilometres each day in your vintage car, usually half in the morning and the other half after the lunch break.

What are the special sights on this tour?

Your road trip through the Alentejo is characterised by its unique landscapes. By visiting the towns of Beja, Elvas and Évora, we bring centuries of Portuguese history to life. You will also pass through typical Alentejan villages on your vintage tour, which welcome you with their whitewashed houses and fortifications.

How long do the journeys take each day?

The trips take around two and a half hours in the morning and afternoon. On the way, we stop at places that are particularly worth seeing - there you can visit the wonderful countryside, original villages and also impressive castles and fortresses.

What is the catering like on the way?

Selected restaurants await you for your lunch break, serving typical local dishes. We provide sufficient drinks for the journey.

Is there enough time for individual activities?

You will receive a road book at the start of the tour, in which the routes are described in detail. This gives you the opportunity to set your own pace on the sections of your vintage tour and linger where you particularly like it.

What is the accommodation like during the tour?

For overnight stays during the tour, we have selected four historic pousadas that bring Portuguese culture to life. In addition to the pousadas in Alcácer do Sal, Beja and Vila Viçosa, these include the Pousada Flor da Rosa in Crato. This is located in a former Maltese monastery from the 14th century. The impressive building is one of the best-preserved Gothic-style buildings in the whole of Portugal. Here, modern architecture meets history and makes the history of Portugal tangible.

Is the tour also suitable for inexperienced classic car drivers?

Our vintage tours are selected so that drivers with less driving experience can also enjoy these road trips. We cover medium distances on the tour through the picturesque Alentejo. We therefore also invite less experienced vintage car fans to take part in our tours and enjoy the special flair of this unique region in a vintage car.

How is luggage transported?

What is the alternative in bad weather?

We will do our utmost to organise our Vintage Tour as planned even if the weather is bad - because the tour is worth it!
