Your road trip

After your arrival in Lisbon, our transfer service will take you to your accommodation, the Pousada do Convento de Arraiolos, which is housed in a 16th century monastery. The monastery's chapel delights art lovers from all over the world with its Portuguese tiles. Our perfectly maintained MGAs are waiting on the forecourt of the monastery complex for a detailed introduction. A dinner together in the dining room of the Convento da Senhora da Assunçao rounds off the first evening of your Vintage Tour. You will get to know your fellow Vintage Tour travellers.

Our route to Crato takes us through the town of Estremoz, whose medieval fortifications we can recognise from afar. We drive into the medieval town centre and stop off at the Pousada de Estremoz, which is housed in the former castle palace and whose origins date back to the 15th century. It offers us a unique view of the vastness of the Alentejo. On our onward journey to Crato, we take in the expansive Alentejo landscape. We pass villages characterised by fortifications and whitewashed houses. In Crato, we are accommodated in the historic Pousada Flor da Rosa, a former monastery of the Order of Malta dating back to the 14th century. We review our first day in the Alentejo over a typical dinner.

The journey to Marvão takes us through the Parque Nacional da Serra de São Mamede. The impressive fortifications of the summit village of Marvão provide us with a marvellous view over the vast Alentejo as far as the Spanish border. Here we have a typical local lunch and make our way back to Crato. We pass endless cork oak forests and stop off in small villages such as Castelo da Vide and Nisa, which impress with their village centres with narrow alleyways and whitewashed houses and tell the story of the northern Alentejo. At the Pousada de Crato, we end the day with a typical local dinner.

On the journey to Vila Viçosa, we pass Campo Maior and Elvas. The landscape combines endless hilly landscapes and expanses, and the view of the fortified villages gives us an idea of the history of this border region. The fortified town of Elvas with its bastion fortifications is a hidden jewel of the Alentejo and invites you to visit it as well as the town centre. After our lunch break in Elvas, we make our way to Vila Viçosa and again pass through impressive landscapes. Here we spend the night in the Pousada Convento Vila Viçosa, which is located in a former monastery from the 14th century. Here we enjoy a typical local dinner in the chapter house of the monastery, which is decorated with frescoes from the 16th century.

One of the highlights of your vintage tour through the northern Alentejo is a visit to the city of Évora, also known as the Queen of the Alentejo. Évora offers an impressive past, jewels of architecture from different eras as far as the eye can see. Here we take time to visit the Roman temple and the Gothic cathedral and, after a long walk through the picturesque city centre, enjoy a typical lunch in the cloister of the Convento dos Loios. We then make our way back to Arraiolos. You have the option of spending another night at the Pousada Convento de Arraiolos or staying overnight at the hotel.

FAQs

How long are the daily distances?

Vintage Tours' tours are designed to give you plenty of time to enjoy the wonderful landscapes and cultural highlights that we have selected for you. On your road trip through the northern Alentejo, you will cover around 150 kilometres each day in your vintage car, usually half in the morning and the other half after the lunch break.

What are the special sights on this tour?

Your road trip through the northern Alentejo is characterised by the unique landscapes that you explore on picturesque roads - but also by history, culture and unique cuisine. By visiting the towns of Elvas and Évora, we bring centuries of history on the Iberian peninsula to life for you. You will also visit the most beautiful towns and villages in the border region between Portugal and Spain with their impressive city walls and fortresses. They blend into the hilly landscapes of the Alentejo and Extremadura.

How long do the journeys take each day?

The trips take around two and a half hours in the morning and afternoon. On the way, we stop at places that are particularly worth seeing - where you can take in the wonderful scenery, historical highlights as well as impressive castles and fortresses.

What is the catering like on the way?

For your lunch break, selected restaurants in historic buildings await you, serving typical local dishes. We will provide you with sufficient drinks for the journey.

Is there enough time for individual activities?

You will receive a road book at the start of the tour, in which the routes are described in detail. This gives you the opportunity to set your own pace on the sections of your vintage tour and linger where you particularly like it.

What is the accommodation like during the tour?

We have selected historic pousadas for overnight stays during the tour, including the Pousadas Convento de Arraiolos, Convento Flor da Rosa and Convento de Vila Viçosa. These are located in former monasteries. The Convento Flor da Rosa in Crato, for example, is one of the best-preserved Gothic-style buildings in the whole of Portugal. Here, modern architecture meets history and makes the history of Portugal tangible.

Is the tour also suitable for inexperienced classic car drivers?

Our vintage tours are selected so that drivers with less driving experience can also enjoy these road trips. We cover medium distances on the tour through the picturesque Alentejo. We therefore also invite less experienced vintage car fans to take part in our tours and enjoy the special flair of our MGAs - perhaps this will be a wonderful introduction to a new passion for you!

What does the instruction in the MGAs look like?

After your arrival at the hotel, you will receive a comprehensive introduction to our MGAs and also have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the car on a short test drive and get ready for your vintage tour.

How is luggage transported?

We take care of the transport of your luggage between the individual stages - so you can cover the day's stages with a small amount of hand luggage.

What is the alternative in bad weather?

Our MGAs offer weather protection - so we will try to organise the tours as planned even in bad weather - because the tour is worth it!

Are there any special requirements for the drivers?

Our MGAs are more than 60 years old and require a careful hand - this is our express wish for you!

What is the maximum group size?

The group size is a maximum of 10 participants. This allows us to respond much better to your individual needs and gives you the opportunity to exchange ideas with your fellow travellers - if you like.

What is the total distance travelled on this Vintage Tour through the northern Alentejo?

The total distance of this vintage tour is around 650 kilometres.
