Your road trip

After your arrival at the Palacio do Freixo in Porto, a stately building from the 18th century, we start with a detailed introduction to the operation of our perfectly maintained MGAs. This is followed by a guided tour to Vila Nova de Gaia, the town on the southern bank of the Douro River, where the famous port wine cellars are located. A joint visit to a winery rounds off the afternoon. The day ends with dinner together in the impressive dining room of the Palacio do Freixo. You will get to know the other participants on your Vintage Tour, with whom you share a passion for classic cars.

On the second day of your classic car tour through the green north of Portugal, we leave Porto in the direction of Guimarães, one of the most beautiful historic cities in northern Portugal, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After our visit to the city, we have lunch here and continue through green landscapes to Braga. Here we visit the oldest cathedral in Portugal and continue to the Bom Jesus monastery. From here, the route takes us through the wine-growing region of Vinho Verde towards Amares and we reach the impressive monastery complex of the historic Pousada de Amares, which has been restored in a modern style. We have dinner together in the former refectory of the monastery and enjoy the typical cuisine and wines of the Minho region in the old vaults.

The journey through the Peneda-Gerês National Park takes us through a natural spectacle of rock formations, unspoilt forests and reservoirs. The large number of streams, waterfalls and reservoirs make this evergreen park one of the most beautiful national parks on the Iberian Peninsula. Peneda-Gerês also boasts a plateau that surprises us with its impressive rock formations. From here we have a unique view of the vastness of Gerês. Let yourself be surprised by how green the north of Portugal is. On our journey, we also pass several monasteries that are perfectly embedded in the landscape and invite us to linger. We spend the night in the Pousada Ganiçada-Gerês, which offers us a marvellous view of the national park.

On the fourth day of our tour, we set off in the direction of Lindoso and cross evergreen forests interspersed with endless streams and green meadows. We now reach the border with Spain and from here we continue along the River Lima to Ponte da Barca and Ponte de Lima, where we stop for a break and a lunch typical of the Minho region. We then continue towards the River Minho, the border river between Portugal and Spain, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean in an impressive delta. We spend the night in the Pousada of Viana do Castelo, which offers us a unique view of the sunset over the Atlantic.

On the last day of your classic car tour through the green north of Portugal, we travel from Viana do Castelo to Barcelos, the town famous for the Galo de Barcelos. We will stop here for a sightseeing tour and have lunch together in the old town centre before continuing on to Porto. Here you have the option of using the airport transfer or spending another night at the Palacio do Freixo in Porto (can be booked individually).

FAQs

How long are the daily distances?

We have designed the tours of Vintage Tours in such a way that there is always enough time to enjoy the sights and landscapes. On your tour through the north of Portugal, you will cover around 150 kilometres a day in your vintage car. We make sure to take long enough lunch breaks to give you enough time to enjoy the flair of the restaurants and the typical local food.

What are the special sights on this tour?

This tour is characterised by the wonderful landscape of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, which is the only national park in Portugal. In addition, the north of Portugal and the Minho region also offer a lot of history and towns worth seeing, which you will also visit. Guimarães is considered the cradle of Portugal, Braga is home to the oldest cathedral in the country and Ponte de Lima is a must-see due to its location and architecture. You will spend the night in historic Pousadas de Portugal, which will also introduce you to history, culture and typical Portuguese cuisine.

What are the sights of Guimarães?

Guimarães is one of the most beautiful towns in the north of Portugal. The cityscape is characterised by buildings from the Middle Ages and charming squares lined with traditional buildings. The Paço dos Duques palace and the Castelo de Guimarães are well worth a visit.

What are the highlights in Braga?

Braga is home to the oldest cathedral in Portugal, making it the religious centre of Portugal. Braga has magnificent squares that invite you to linger. A visit to the Bom Jesus do Monte monastery, which offers a unique view of Braga, rounds off a visit to Braga.

What can drivers expect in Peneda-Gerês?

The scenic beauty of the Peneda-Gerês National Park is unrivalled: Vintage Tours takes you through enchanted river valleys and fern forests as well as along rugged rock formations. We pass a wide variety of monasteries that still serve as pilgrimage towns today. Let yourself be surprised by the scenic diversity of this region, which will make your Vintage Tour a unique and unforgettable experience.

What does the Lima Valley look like?

The Lima Valley develops westwards from a rugged rocky landscape to a wide river delta, which is characterised by the cultivation of Vinho Verde wine. The journey along the Lima leads through a multitude of medieval villages. The highlight of the journey is the small towns of Ponte da Barca and Ponte de Lima, whose townscape is characterised by the eponymous Roman bridge that connects the two districts. Ponte de Lima, which today is a crowd-puller in the north of Portugal, has a large number of historic manor houses. Here you can sample the typical cuisine of the Minho region and will be delighted by the Vinho Verde wines.

What is the accommodation like during the tour?

For overnight stays during the tour, we have selected several pousadas that will bring you closer to the rich culture of northern Portugal. These include the Pousada Mosteiro de Amares. This is located in a Cistercian monastery from the 12th century, which was restored by the famous architect Eduardo Souto de Moura. This is where history meets modernity - dinner in the monastery kitchen takes you back to the Middle Ages.

Is there enough time for individual activities during the tour?

You will receive a road book at the start of the tour, in which the routes are described in detail. This gives you the opportunity to set your own pace on the sections of your vintage tour and linger where you particularly like it.

What does the instruction in the MGAs look like?

After your arrival at the hotel, you will receive a comprehensive introduction to our MGAs and also have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the car on a short test drive and get ready for your vintage tour.

How is luggage transported?

We take care of the transport of your luggage between the individual stages - so you can cover the day's stages with a small amount of hand luggage.

What is the alternative in bad weather?

Our MGAs offer weather protection - so we will try to organise the tours as planned even in bad weather - because the tour is worth it!

Are there any special requirements for the drivers?

Our MGAs are more than 60 years old and require a careful hand - this is our express wish for you!

What is the maximum group size?

The group size is a maximum of 10 participants. This allows us to respond much better to your individual needs and gives you the opportunity to exchange ideas with your fellow travellers - if you like.
