Your road trip
Upon your arrival in Lisbon, our transfer service will take us all to our accommodation, the Pousada do Convento de Arraiolos, which is housed in a 16th-century convent and delights art lovers with its chapel adorned with Portuguese tiles. Our perfectly maintained MGAs will be waiting in the courtyard of the monastery complex for a detailed introduction. Over dinner together in the dining room of the Convento da Senhora da Assunção, you’ll get to know the other participants on your Vintage Tour, with whom you’ll be spending the next few days on your classic car journey.
Our journey to Crato takes us through the town of Estremoz, whose medieval fortifications are visible from a distance. We drive into the medieval town centre and stop off at the Pousada de Estremoz, housed in the former castle palace, whose origins date back to the 15th century. From here, there is a unique view across the vast Alentejo countryside and as far as Extremadura. As we continue on our way to Crato, we take in the expansive landscape of the Alentejo. We pass through villages characterised by fortifications and whitewashed houses. In Crato, we stay at the historic Pousada Flor da Rosa, a former 14th-century monastery of the Order of Malta. After an aperitif in the monastery’s unique vaulted cellar, we round off the day with dinner together and reflect on this unique stage of our classic car tour.
On our way to Cáceres, we pass through the Parque Nacional da Serra de S. Mamede. We pass the impressive fortifications of Marvão, a hilltop village from where we have a unique view of the Alentejo stretching as far as Extremadura. After our lunch break in Marvão, we carry on, travelling through unspoilt countryside, endless olive groves and cork oak forests, until we reach Cáceres, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. A stroll through the "City of 1,001 Coats of Arms“ transports us to another era. We are surrounded by mansions, Renaissance palaces and church towers inhabited by storks, all of which bear witness to different eras. After a thorough exploration of Cáceres’s old town, we return to our hotel, where we enjoy dinner together.
We continue our Vintage Tour through picturesque countryside to Mérida, which boasts one of the best-preserved collections of Roman monuments in the world. Here we’ll stop off to visit the monuments of Roman culture and sample the typical tapas of Extremadura in the bars. We then continue south, travelling through vast oak forests until we reach the town of Zafra, also known as "Little Seville". After a stroll through the picturesque town centre, we’ll check in at the Parador de Zafra, housed in the former Alcázar of Zafra. We’ll enjoy dinner in the Alcázar’s unique courtyard, which is famous, amongst other things, for its Renaissance cloister.
We leave Zafra and drive through the Alentejo towards Vila Viçosa. On the way, we pass the impressive Mourão reservoir, which is dotted with many small sandy beaches. We stop for a break in the medieval hilltop village of Monsaraz. From here, a breathtaking view opens up across the vast expanses of the Alentejo and Extremadura. We then continue our classic car journey to Vila Viçosa. After arriving at the Pousada de Vila Viçosa, there’s still time to explore the historic centre. We round off this memorable day’s drive through the stunning landscapes of the Alentejo with dinner in the monastery’s former refectory. An experience you’ll remember for a long time to come!
The final day of our Vintage Tour takes us to Évora, the ‘Queen of the Alentejo’, whose historic centre boasts impressive architectural gems dating from Roman times right through to the Renaissance. On our guided tour of Évora, we’ll explore the Temple of Diana, amongst other sights, before having lunch in the cloister of the Monasterio dos Lóios.
We will then set off for Arraiolos, where our classic car tour comes to an end. Here, you have the option of heading back to Lisbon or spending another night at the Pousada de Arraiolos.
